Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should

That’s what a smart girl said to me once when we were talking about unshapely people who wore revealing clothing.

It’s a free country, yes you can wear whatever you want. But why wear clothes that make you a laughingstock? These days there has been a lot of emphasis on body positivity and not shaming people no matter their size or shape. That’s a good thing. Nobody should be made to feel inferior just because they don’t fit the modern beauty ideal.

However, this body positivity movement has gone too far. There’s a girl who I follow on instagram who is overweight and lumpy. She was very self conscious and expressed her discomfort about her body. Her supportive followers told her she looked amazing and told her to be proud of her body the way it is. So she got the courage to post pictures of herself wearing shorts even though her legs weren’t perfect. No problem there. One doesn’t need to have the legs of a runway model to feel ok about to post a photo of themselves wearing shorts.

But then she started getting more bold from the encouragement of her followers and posted photos of herself in her underwear with her rolls and cellulite hanging out. This was under the premise of body positivity. No one (skinny, medium, or fat) should be posting photos of themselves scantily clad. Even if you’re a supermodel, you still look like a desperate whore if you post half naked pictures of yourself. Same goes if you’re plus size.

This is one girl I’m using as an example, but it’s all over the place. This disturbing body positivity phenomenon now permeates social media and magazines. You can hardly scroll or flip pages without seeing a large woman showing all she’s got just to prove a point. But the only point being proven is that plus size women are just as insecure, skanky, and whorish as average sized and thin women.
